How Do I Keep Charged and Empty Batteries Separate and Organized?
The more rechargeable AA/AAA batteries you use, the more likely one problem becomes: fully charged batteries and depleted batteries start to get mixed together.
Two batteries come out of a remote control and are left on the table. Four more come out of a game controller. A set that was charged a few days ago is still sitting in the charger. After a few days, they all look almost identical and you can no longer tell which batteries are ready to use immediately.
1. Create at Least Three Clear States
TO CHARGE
The battery has just come out of a device and needs to enter the charging workflow.
CHARGING
The battery is currently being processed in the charging workflow.
READY
The battery is fully charged and can be used immediately.
That gives every battery one direction of travel after it leaves a device: Device → TO CHARGE → CHARGING → READY → Device.
This is the most important principle: build a one-way workflow.
2. Do Not Make “Fully Charged” Something You Have to Remember
A common issue with traditional chargers is that a battery can finish charging and remain in the same slot. If you come back a day or two later, you may need to check the indicator again — or you may no longer remember whether that group finished charging.
A better approach is to connect “fully charged” with “returned to ready inventory.” On the Linogy 8-slot charging station, charging stops automatically when a battery is fully charged. In practical terms, “still above” means the battery is being processed, while “in the storage compartment” means it has finished charging and entered READY inventory.

3. Create a CHECK / TEST Area for Batteries With Uncertain Status
Real life always produces a few batteries that you cannot classify immediately: Was this one already charged? Why did it behave unusually as soon as I inserted it? Was its runtime especially short last time?
Do not put those batteries into READY inventory and do not mix them back into the TO CHARGE group. Give them a separate CHECK / TEST area, review battery status and voltage first, and then decide whether they should be recharged, observed further, or removed from use.
This is also where state of charge and state of health need to stay separate. Voltage can help indicate the current state, but it cannot by itself prove long-term battery health. A decision to retire a battery should also consider capacity, runtime, and long-term behavior.
4. Let the Display Add Information to READY Status — Not Replace Physical Status Zones
The foundation of the system is still physical location and the automatic movement into storage, but the E-Ink display can provide an extra information layer. It shows battery voltage and other charging-status information and how many fully charged batteries are ready to use. That lets you judge whether READY inventory is sufficient without opening the storage area and counting batteries one by one.
The display is useful for quickly confirming inventory, but the basic TO CHARGE / CHARGING / READY / CHECK logic should still be maintained through clear physical locations and a one-way workflow.
5. Color Can Be a Natural Secondary Marker
If the batteries themselves come in different colors, you do not need a strict system such as “red always means X” and “green always means Y.” A more practical use of color is to remember which batteries came from the same device, which batteries are usually used together, or which battery recently behaved abnormally.
Compared with placing a number on dozens of individual batteries, color recognition adds almost no extra management burden.
6. Battery Storage Location Also Matters for Safety
Organized batteries should be kept in a cool, dry place at normal room temperature. Avoid long-term storage in a hot vehicle, next to a heater, or in direct sunlight.
Also avoid keeping loose batteries in the same drawer as conductive metal objects such as keys, coins, screws, or paper clips. A dedicated battery box, storage compartment, or Battery Station does more than make the space look tidy — it also reduces the chance of battery terminals accidentally contacting conductive objects.
The Simplest Rule: Let Location Represent Status
TO CHARGE → not ready to use yet
CHARGING → currently being processed
READY → can be taken and used immediately
CHECK / TEST → temporarily keep it out of normal inventory
Once every state has a fixed location, even a household with dozens of AA and AAA batteries no longer needs to rely on memory. You only need to look at where the battery is to know what should happen next.
